We’ve put together a list of the most popular destinations Winnipeggers will be gathering on Thursday for Canada Day. We can’t possibly round up every local event, so if you feel we missed something, please submit the event.- Canada Day at The Forks — The hub of Canada Day celebrations, The Forks will offer a fun-filled day of entertainment for all ages, including a concert by The Waking Eyes, and other great local bands, on the Scotiabank Stage. Admission is free and festivities get underway at noon, with fireworks ending the day at 11 p.m. View a complete lineup. Also at The Forks, Citytv’s “Breakfast Television” will be broadcasting live from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Despite what the event poster looks like, there won’t be a petting zoo on site.
- Assiniboine Park — The busiest and most lively place to be will be Assiniboine Park, as thousands gather to celebrate Canada’s birthday. Traffic along Corydon Ave. was a nightmare last year, and finding a parking spot within walking distance to the park was nearly impossible unless you arrived bright and early. Plan accordingly and slap on the sunscreen. Games and activities for children, exciting entertainment on the Lyric Theatre Stage and a fireworks display from Archangel Fireworks at dusk. Admission is free. Various food vendors will be on site.
- Assiniboine Park Zoo — Admission to the zoo on Canada Day is free again this year. Dubbed “Mayor’s Family Day at the Zoo,” kids can scroll around the grounds freely from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
- Royal Canadian Mint — The Mint at 520 Lagimodiere Blvd. will host their annual Canada Day celebration from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. featuring the Vancouver 2010 Athlete Medals, free tours of the facility, face painting, clowns and magicians for the kids, and a BBQ lunch from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
- Osborne Village BIZ Canada Day Street Festival and Market – The annual festival, which attracts over 100,000 people every year is going to be bigger, better and greener than ever before. The festival includes a huge kid’s zone with inflatable games slides and bouncers, face painting, balloon sculptors, a petting zoo and interactive lessons for kids and parents. Also, for the first time this year, there will be an active living demonstration area including free yoga, hula hoop lessons and demonstrations from local gymnastic and dance clubs. The main stage is full of performers ranging from blues, folk and country to celtic rock and as always the festival market and extended patios right on Osborne Street from River to McMillan Avenues are sure to present something for everyone from every walk of life.
- Family BBQ at FortWhyte Alive — The Buffalo Stone Café will be serving up hot delicious barbeque perfect for an afternoon lunch on the south deck of the Alloway Reception Centre. No reservations required. Adults are $14.99 and children 12 and under are $8.99.
- Lower Fort Garry — Free admission to the National Historic Site between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.
- Fort Gibraltar — Strolling musicians, historical interpretation, sketches, voyageur games, crafts and hobby demonstrations and more will be featured from 10 a.m. to 6p.m. Admission is free for all visitors on Canada Day.
- Western Canadian Aviation Museum — The museum is open from noon to 5 p.m. and admission is only a toonie.
- Manitoba Museum — Open from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. Admission is free for children under 12 wearing red and white.
